Mannin Kennel Association
In the late 1970's a group of friends
met for ringcraft training and held Exemption Shows under the name
Vannin and since that time Ringcraft Classes continue to be a major part
of Club life with a current average of 18 dogs attending each week.
In 1982 the Club's first application
registration with The Kennel Club under the name Vannin was rejected,
however in 1984 The Kennel Club gave approval for another application to
be made. An application was submitted with three names put up for
consideration. This application was successful with the club to be known
as the Mannin Kennel Association.
In 1990 the Club formed a sister
club link with the WA Terrier Club and exchanged trophies that have been
competed for on an annual basis since. In addition the there has been
regular communication of magazines and videos on dog activities that are
viewed with great interest by our members. The regular publicity about
our "Aussie Show" has also been good for the club especially in our
fledgling years. Our older members remember the first "Aussie Show'
which was won by 16year old Karl Slann and his Border Terrier "Darkroom
Safelight". Karl was thrilled to be the first winner and recently
revealed that he still treasures the letter he received for the then WA
Terrier Club Secretary, Neridah
Sharrett congratulating him on his win.
In 1991 the Club began distributing
"Alert - Dogs at Home" cards as a community service. These cards,
carried by dog owners so that in the event of an accident, services are
alerted to the fact that there are dogs at home to be looked after and
give the names of contact people. This has proved to be a much valued
community service.
The Club holds two Shows a year
in March and September as well as six Dog Matches annually. In February
each year the individual winners in the Shows and Matches compete in a
Supermatch. Where did Mannin's name come from? Vannin and Mannin are
derivations of the early names for the Isle of Man, first recorded as
Mona by Julius Caesar in 54 BC, and both have significance today. The
national song is called Ellan Vannin, as, no doubt, fans of the Manx
born group, The Bee Gees, are well aware. It is likely that the basis
for the name is the Gaelic "monadth' and latin "Maun' meaning mountain
referring to the island's mountains rising form the sea. The more
romantic prefer the name to relate to the Celtic sea God "Mannanin Mc
Lir" I guess that spelling changes over the years are acceptable as even
today we get names wrong. For example three early settlers north of
Perth named their property, Ballajora, after their village on the Isle
of Man. This is now the suburb of Ballajura
